The first generation of the ultra-luxury flagship sedan launched under the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand, based on the stretched W222 platform.
The first-generation Mercedes-Maybach S-Class with the factory code X222 made its global debut in late 2014, revitalizing the storied marque as an ultra-luxury sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz. Built on the rear-wheel-drive MRA platform, it features a wheelbase extended by 200 millimeters compared to the long-wheelbase S-Class. Distinguishing design elements include a redesigned rear door assembly with the quarter light moved into the C-pillar to afford rear-seat occupants enhanced privacy. The opulent cabin boasts individual reclining Executive rear seats with calf rests, heating, ventilation, and massage functions, as well as an active noise compensation system. The powertrain lineup was crowned by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine in the S 600 and subsequent S 650 models, complemented by 4.7-liter and 4.0-liter biturbo V8 units in the S 500 and S 560 variants, paired with 7-speed and 9-speed automatic transmissions. In selected regional markets, four-wheel-drive 4MATIC systems and six-cylinder petrol or diesel options were also provided. The 2017 mid-cycle refresh introduced an imposing vertical-strut grille, optional two-tone exterior paint finishes, and upgraded digital cockpit features. Key markets included China, the United States, Russia, Europe, and the Middle East.
