Lotus Exige I gallery (2000–2002)

The raw, track-focused coupe based on the Elise Series 1 powered by the high-revving Rover VHPD engine.

The original Lotus Exige (Series 1) was launched in 2000 as a road-going homologation derivative of the Lotus Sport Elise race car. Utilizing the bonded aluminum tub of the Elise Series 1, the Exige featured a rigid fixed-head fiberglass coupe body, a prominent roof-mounted cold-air intake scoop, an aggressive front splitter, and a functional rear wing generating substantial high-speed downforce. It was powered by a tuned 1.8-liter Rover K-Series VHPD (Very High Performance Derivative) inline-four engine developing 177 hp in standard form and 190 hp with the optional track pack, paired with a close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission. Tipping the scales at roughly 780 kg, the Exige was equipped with race-tuned suspension, adjustable dampers, and wider wheels wrapped in track-oriented Yokohama A039 tires. Production was limited to approximately 600 units through 2002, sold across the UK, mainland Europe, and Japan as a dedicated driver's instrument.
