Lancia Kappa I (838) gallery (1994–2001)

The Lancia Kappa (Type 838) was introduced in 1994 as the brand's executive flagship, replacing the highly regarded Thema. Built on the Fiat Type E platform, it featured an all-around independent suspension setup with MacPherson struts front and rear, providing exceptional ride comfort and high-speed stability. The model lineup included a four-door saloon, a five-door estate known as the SW (designed and built by Pininfarina), and a distinctive two-door Coupé featuring a shortened wheelbase, assembled by Carrozzeria Maggiora. The powertrain portfolio featured modular five-cylinder petrol engines in 2.0 and 2.4-litre naturally aspirated forms, along with punchy turbocharged variants producing up to 220 horsepower, topped by a glorious 3.0-litre Alfa Romeo Busso V6. Diesel options included a 2.4-litre turbodiesel, upgraded in later production years to the sophisticated 2.4 JTD Common Rail unit. Transmission choices consisted of five-speed manuals and four- or five-speed automatic gearboxes sourced from ZF and Aisin. Compared to its predecessor, the Kappa delivered substantially more interior space, superior sound deadening, and lavish upholstery choices such as Poltrona Frau leather and high-grade Alcantara. In 1998, a mid-cycle update was introduced, bringing revised body-colored bumpers, subtle interior enhancements, and updated powerplant revisions. The Kappa was marketed predominantly across continental European countries, especially in Italy, where it frequently served as state transport for government officials.
