The first-generation Honda Pilot (YF1) debuted in mid-2002 as Honda's flagship North American crossover. Built on the Global Mid-Size unibody platform with integrated frame rails (shared with the Odyssey and Acura MDX), it featured a four-wheel independent suspension and standard three-row 8-passenger capacity.
Power came from a 3.5-liter J35A V6 engine (240–255 hp) mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The VTM-4 (Variable Torque Management) AWD system offered a driver-selectable rear differential lock for slippery, low-speed conditions. A 2005 mid-cycle update introduced a 2WD variant with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and revised front grille/lighting designs.
