The first-generation Honda HR-V (GH1-GH4) debuted in 1998, constructed on a platform shared with the Logo. Positioned as a 'Joy Machine', it combined high seating position, bold styling, and sharp roof spoiler features in both 3-door and 5-door body options.

Powering the vehicle were 1.6-liter D16-series engines (105 to 125 hp with VTEC). Transmissions included a 5-speed manual and Honda's Multimatic S CVT. The Real Time 4WD system engaged automatically upon front slip. A 2001 facelift introduced circular fog lamps and updated front bumper intakes.
