Holden Torana II (LC/LJ/TA) gallery (1969–1975)
The second-generation Holden Torana LC/LJ/TA, renowned for introducing inline-six engines and legendary Bathurst-winning GTR XU-1 models.
Introduced in October 1969, the second-generation Holden Torana (starting with the LC series) transformed the model from a modest commuter into an Australian high-performance icon. Holden radically modified the monocoque, extending the wheelbase and front clip to accommodate the brand's potent 'Red' inline-six engines in 2.25-litre, 2.6-litre, and 2.85-litre displacements alongside standard 1.2-litre and 1.6-litre four-cylinder units. Available in two-door coupe and four-door sedan configurations, the platform spawned the legendary Torana GTR XU-1 homologation special. Equipped with triple Stromberg carburetors, high-lift camshafts, and close-ratio gearboxes, the XU-1 famously conquered the 1972 Bathurst 500 endurance race in the hands of Peter Brock. In 1972, the updated LJ series arrived with refreshed styling and an enlarged 3.3-litre (202 cu in) straight-six engine. The generation concluded with the transitional TA series in 1974–1975, offering fuel-efficient four-cylinder motoring during the global energy crisis. The LC and LJ series remain celebrated milestones of Australasian muscle car culture.
