Holden Kingswood I (HK/HT/HG) gallery (1968–1971)
The first generation Holden Kingswood HK/HT/HG, serving as the definitive full-size Australian family car and introducing local V8 engines.
The Kingswood nameplate was officially launched in January 1968 with the arrival of the all-new Holden HK full-size series, occupying the mainstream volume-selling middle tier between the basic Belmont and prestigious Premier. Built on a robust rear-wheel-drive platform, the HK featured broader proportions, contemporary American-inspired styling, and substantial improvements in ride comfort and safety. Body offerings encompassed a four-door sedan, five-door station wagon, two-door utility ('ute'), and a panel van. Power was initially provided by 2.6-litre (161 cu in) and 3.05-litre (186 cu in) 'Red' straight-six engines, alongside an imported 5.0-litre Chevrolet V8. In 1969, the updated HT series introduced Holden's legendary locally developed Australian V8 engines in 4.2-litre (253 cu in) and 5.0-litre (308 cu in) capacities, alongside the smooth three-speed Tri-Matic automatic transmission. The HG update in 1970 refined the formula with revised grille designs and standard safety upgrades. The HK-HG generations represented the quintessential Aussie family and commercial workhorse of the late 1960s.
