The Great Wall Deer compact utility pickup truck established the manufacturer's commercial success through its simple construction, high payload, and durability.
Produced from March 1996 to June 2013, the Great Wall Deer was the vehicle that launched Great Wall Motor into global automobile export markets. Mechanically derived from the fifth-generation Toyota Hilux YN85 platform, the Deer features a heavy-duty steel frame with rear leaf-spring suspension and a torsion-bar front setup. The model range encompassed diverse body styles including single-cab (G1), extended-cab (G2), standard crew-cab (G3), and long-bed configurations (G4 and G5). Power was supplied by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine (code 491QE, derived from Toyota's 4Y engine) producing approximately 105 horsepower, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Buyers could select between rear-wheel drive and a robust part-time four-wheel-drive system with a manual shift transfer case. Interior appointments focused strictly on utility, featuring durable fabric seating, power steering, manual windows, and basic heating. Exported extensively across the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, the Deer built Great Wall's early reputation for affordable commercial workhorses.
