GMC Typhoon I gallery (1991–1993)

The GMC Typhoon was produced by General Motors from 1991 to 1993 as a high-performance variant of the first-generation compact GMC Jimmy based on the GMT330 truck architecture. It was offered strictly in a two-door SUV body style. The vehicle was powered by a 4.3-liter LB4 turbocharged V6 engine equipped with a Mitsubishi TD06-17C turbocharger and a Garrett liquid-to-air intercooler, generating 280 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. The only available transmission was a 4-speed automatic 4L60 (formerly known as the TH700-R4). Power was sent to all four wheels through a permanent all-wheel-drive system featuring a BorgWarner transfer case with a viscous coupling, distributing torque 35 percent to the front and 65 percent to the rear. Handling was enhanced by a sport-tuned lowered suspension featuring rear self-leveling air shocks and an upgraded anti-lock braking system. Sold primarily in North America, the Typhoon achieved legendary status as one of the quickest accelerating utility vehicles of its era.
