Firefly is a compact electric sub-brand of NIO designed to deliver boutique, high-tech city cars for global markets.
The Firefly brand, known in Chinese as Yinghuochong, was officially introduced by NIO during the annual NIO Day event on December 21, 2024. Created as NIO's third strategic brand alongside NIO and Onvo, Firefly focuses on premium compact urban vehicles built for tight city streets, smart commuting, and modern lifestyle drivers.
Firefly targets the boutique small electric car segment, competing directly with high-end urban hatchbacks and premium compact crossovers. The brand was specifically engineered with international export in mind, particularly targeting European metropolitan regions where compact vehicle dimensions, easy parking, and maneuverability are paramount for drivers.
The brand's initial model, simply named Firefly EV, entered customer delivery in April 2025. The subcompact hatchback launched with a 105 kW rear electric motor, a 42.1 kWh battery pack, and an electric driving range of approximately 420 kilometers under CLTC rating standards.
Firefly vehicles are built on a dedicated compact electric platform engineered to achieve top five-star safety ratings under Euro NCAP crash test protocols. Importantly, Firefly models share technical synergy with NIO's ecosystem, including automated battery swapping capabilities tailored for compact vehicles.
Firefly provides NIO with a focused entry into the high-volume European compact hatchback and small crossover segments. By bringing premium build quality, modern software, and swapping infrastructure into the urban car category, Firefly broadens NIO's international footprint.
