The BYD Yuan subcompact crossover debuted in 2016, serving as the entry-level SUV in the Dynasty lineup and evolving from internal combustion to pure electric power.
Debuting in early 2016, the BYD Yuan was launched as a subcompact crossover SUV slotting below the compact Song within BYD's Dynasty series. Constructed on a front-wheel-drive platform featuring a MacPherson front suspension and a rear torsion beam, the 4.3-meter five-door crossover stood out with its youthful styling and exterior-mounted spare tire on the sideways-opening tailgate. Initial powertrains included a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 109 horsepower and a 1.5-liter turbocharged unit with 154 horsepower, matched to a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. A high-performance plug-in hybrid Yuan DM combined the turbo engine with dual electric motors for all-wheel drive and 305 total horsepower. In 2018, BYD introduced the all-electric Yuan EV, which gained popularity and was later revamped in 2021 as the Yuan Pro featuring a Dragon Face front end and Blade LFP battery technology with ranges up to 401 kilometers. Interior highlights comprise a rotatable center touchscreen, keyless entry, and automatic air conditioning. The crossover remained in production until 2024 and was exported to South American markets as the BYD S1 Pro.
