Produced between 2015 and 2020, the BYD e5 electric sedan served as a dependable, high-mileage commercial electric vehicle for taxi and ride-hailing fleets across China.
Introduced in late 2015, the BYD e5 was produced as a compact all-electric sedan tailored primarily for commercial fleets and taxi operators. Built upon the structural architecture of the Surui gasoline sedan, the front-wheel-drive vehicle utilizes MacPherson struts at the front axle and an independent multi-link rear suspension. Its traditional four-door notchback body spans 4.68 meters in overall length, providing a practical cabin and a 450-liter trunk capacity. Propulsion is supplied by a front-mounted electric motor generating 218 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque connected to a single-speed reduction transmission. Early versions designated e5 300 carried a 48 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery delivering 300 kilometers of range, while later e5 450 models upgraded to a 60.5 kWh battery boosting range to 450 kilometers on the NEDC cycle. Standard equipment included ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and rear parking sensors. Manufactured in Xi'an through 2020, the e5 achieved massive commercial adoption throughout major Chinese cities before being replaced by newer Qin EV models.
