Unveiled at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show, the first-generation Audi Q3 (chassis code 8U) expanded Audi's Q family into the compact luxury crossover space. Utilizing the PQ35 platform, the Q3 featured a coupe-like roofline, wrap-around tailgate design constructed from lightweight aluminum, and clean surfaces. The rigid body structure ensured excellent refinement and acoustic comfort.

Engine options for the 8U included turbocharged 1.4 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI gasoline units alongside economical 2.0 TDI diesels, mated to manual or 6/7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmissions. Most models featured Haldex quattro all-wheel drive for confident traction. A mid-cycle refresh in 2014 refined the front grille styling and added updated LED lighting.
