Released in late 1995 for the 1996 model year, the Acura SLX (UBS chassis) was Acura's first sport-utility vehicle. Created via an OEM partnership with Isuzu, the SLX was a rebadged version of the second-generation Isuzu Trooper, equipped with premium leather seating, sunroof, and upgraded trim. It utilized traditional body-on-frame construction with Torque-on-Demand (TOD) four-wheel drive. Engineering priorities for this generation focused on structural rigidity, chassis refinement, and elevating active safety capabilities.

Initial models used a 3.2-liter SOHC V6 engine producing 190 horsepower mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. For the 1998 model year, the SLX received a front-end restyle and an upgraded 3.5-liter DOHC 6VE1 V6 engine producing 215 horsepower before being discontinued after 1999. A comprehensive list of standard features combined with proven powertrain durability helped secure a strong market presence in its segment.
