$87B for Diesel Scandal around Volkswagen
A finance company based in Switzerland supposes that Volkswagen will have to pay $87 billion for the diesel scandal in the worst case.
The sum that will be paid for correcting the emissions issues, settling civil court cases, reimbursing the drivers can reach $87 billion. Credit Suisse suggests that the most conservative price will stand at $26.8 billion. The German producer has left $7.3 billion in order to deal with cheating in diesel emissions testing. An automaker’s spokesman responded to Credit Suisse and assured that numbers are just a speculation. He is sure that all those calculations are nonsense.
According to the bank’s analyst, the biggest cost will be paid as the compensation for the customers, since the cars have lost their value. The German producer might try to preserve the costs down. It is possible with offering discounts on new cars to the customers who have bought the affected ones. This will definitely be better than reimbursing them with cash.
The producer will probably have to pay $18 billion fine from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Volkswagen has been already announced in a whole bunch of class action lawsuits.
