The Next Subaru Outback: A Transformation into an SUV

Spy Photos Unveil the Next-Generation Subaru Outback

  • Bulky proportions and squared-off body lines redefine its appearance.
  • Expected to be released as a 2026 model.

The upcoming Subaru Outback is set to undergo significant changes. Recent spy photos give us a glimpse of the new wagon, which looks like it has shed its traditional wagon identity.

Various camouflaged prototypes were spotted in public, and it's apparent that the Outback now leans more towards the SUV category. Subaru's new design exhibits strong crossover characteristics, highlighted by an upright silhouette. The front fascia boasts a beefier look with a larger center grille and prominent corner vents on the lower portion. While there may be some misdirection with certain body panels, the SUV-inspired elements are clear.

As we move along the sides, we notice straight lines replacing the current Outback's curved roof. This new profile gives the vehicle a significantly taller appearance, and the side windows transform into rectangular shapes starting from the D-pillar, reminiscent of the older generation Legacy Outback. Although there are some disguised details, it's hard to ignore these changes.

The wheel arches, a polarizing design feature seen on other Subaru models, are exposed on the new Outback. These arches bring the Outback in line with the rest of the Subaru lineup, and the slender headlights resemble those found on the Forester. It seems that the top lights will serve as daytime running lamps in a split-light configuration.

The 2026 Subaru Outback: A Closer Look

There isn't much to see of the interior from the spy shots, except for the glimpses of two tablet-style screens. This marks a departure from the current Outback, which has a large vertical touchscreen integrated into the dash. Details about the powertrain are also limited at this time, but it is likely that the new Outback will feature a hybrid setup, utilizing Subaru's renowned boxer engine and a geared transmission instead of a CVT.

Anticipate the next-generation Subaru Outback to make its debut next year as a 2026 model.
