2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid: Finally Unveiled at the 2025 Chicago Auto Show
Subaru Introduces the Forester Hybrid
After much anticipation, the 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid has finally been unveiled. This new hybrid model features a single electric motor that complements the 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine and CVT transmission. Subaru's decision to electrify the Forester follows the release of the Crosstrek Hybrid, making hybrid options available for their top two selling models.
Joining the Forester Hybrid at the Chicago Auto Show is the new Forester Wilderness. This variant of the Forester boasts a bolder design, including bigger tires and a more prominent grille, giving it a rugged appearance.
Improved Fuel Efficiency for the Forester Hybrid
The Forester Hybrid offers better fuel economy without any surprises. The electric motor, powered by a 1.1-kWh battery pack, delivers 118 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. Combined with the gas engine, the system output reaches 194 horsepower. The hybrid system allows for limited electric-only operation, although the small battery limits its range.
The 2025 Forester Hybrid achieves an EPA estimated fuel mileage of 35 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined—an impressive 40% increase in the city compared to the standard engine. However, it falls short of hybrid competitors like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Nevertheless, the Forester Hybrid retains Subaru's signature horizontally opposed engine sound.
Key Features and Pricing
The hybrid powertrain doesn't compromise the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, and the Forester Hybrid maintains a ground clearance of 8.7 inches. Inside, this hybrid SUV comes equipped with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and an 11.6-inch tablet-oriented center screen. Standard features include Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist technology and a unique exterior color called Daybreak Blue Pearl.
Subaru offers the Forester Hybrid in various trim levels, with prices starting at $36,415, including the destination charge. Look for this hybrid model to arrive at dealerships in the spring of 2025.
The Adventurous Forester Wilderness
Alongside the Forester Hybrid, Subaru introduced the Forester Wilderness at the Chicago Auto Show. This variant emphasizes off-road capabilities, featuring larger springs, shocks, and a ground clearance of 9.3 inches. The CVT includes a different final drive ratio, optimizing performance in low-speed situations.
Other notable upgrades include the advanced X-Mode Dual Drive system, which enhances traction on various terrains, and a transmission cooler, enabling the Forester Wilderness to tow up to 3,500 pounds. The exterior stands out with dark plastic trim, copper accents, roof rails with an 800-pound capacity, and Wilderness-specific anthracite wheels.
The Forester Wilderness is powered by the standard 2.5-liter flat four engine, generating 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. This variant will be available for sale in the fall of 2026, with pricing details yet to be announced.
