Peugeot Introduces Electric E-208 GTi, Reviving the Iconic GTi Legacy
Surprise! Peugeot has outpaced Volkswagen in launching an electric GTi. While Volkswagen showcased a concept in 2023 and has been hinting at a production model since, Peugeot is now bringing its electric version to the market ahead of time. Staying true to tradition, the brand continues to stylize "GTi" with a lowercase "i," preserving the essence of the legacy. The combustion-engine GTi lineage concluded in 2020 with the 308 GTi, and the new E-208 GTi marks the start of its electric successor.
This model stands as Peugeot Sport's inaugural fully electric vehicle, following the introduction of the spirited 508 hybrid a few years prior. Maintaining a front-wheel-drive setup typical of performance hatchbacks, the E-208 GTi is equipped with a refined motor that churns out 280 horsepower and 345 Newton-meters (245 pound-feet) of torque, matching the performance of the Abarth 600e.
This represents a substantial increase—124 hp and 85 Nm (63 lb-ft) more than the standard electric subcompact. The additional electric power enables the E-208 GTi to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in merely 5.7 seconds, with a top speed reaching 180 km/h (112 mph).
Understandably, this boost in performance comes at the expense of range. Opting for speed over efficiency reduces the WLTP combined cycle rating from 433 to 350 kilometers (269 to 217 miles). The GTi retains the standard 54-kWh battery capacity and can recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes using a 100 kW DC fast charger.
Enhanced Performance Features
The E-208 GTi isn't just about a more powerful motor. Peugeot has equipped it with a sport-tuned suspension that lowers the vehicle by 30 mm (1.1 inches), enhancing handling dynamics. The front and rear tracks are widened by 56 mm (2.2 inches) and 25 mm (1 inch) respectively, giving the car a more aggressive profile. It rides on exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels that echo the design of the original 208 GTi, accentuating the flared fenders.
A striking red exterior pays tribute to the classic 205 GTi, while subtle aerodynamic enhancements like a front spoiler and a rear diffuser with integrated LED fog lights complete the sporty aesthetic.
Advanced Driving Capabilities
Performance is further elevated with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires (215/40/18), a self-locking differential incorporated into the gearbox, and a newly designed rear anti-roll bar. The braking system features larger 355-mm front discs paired with four-piston calipers for superior stopping power. For enthusiasts looking to maximize performance, a dedicated Sport mode allows the driver to disable all assistance technologies with a single press.
Interior Refinements
Inside, the E-208 GTi distinguishes itself from the standard models. The redesigned front seats, featuring integrated headrests and a central red stripe, pay homage to the legendary 205 GTi 1.9, while the right-side seat pattern nods to the 205 GTi 1.6. Luxurious Alcantara accents, custom floor mats, and a red badge adorn the compact steering wheel, enhancing the cabin's sporty ambiance.
The E-208 GTi made its debut during the Le Mans 24 Hours weekend, signaling Peugeot's commitment to expanding the GTi range with electric models. While it's not the first electric hot hatch available—competitors include the Abarth 500e, Cupra Born VZ, Mini John Cooper Works Electric, Alpine A290, and the MG4 XPower—peugeot's quick market entry sets a new benchmark. Enthusiasts are still eagerly awaiting Volkswagen's own electric GTi release.
