Mercedes-Benz Introduces Cutting-Edge EV Technology for the Next CLA
Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA): Gateway to Electric Future
The forthcoming CLA Class is set to lead the way in introducing Mercedes-Benz's next-generation EV and 48-volt hybrid powertrains. Alongside two SUVs, all three vehicles will be built on the groundbreaking Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), as the automaker continues its journey towards a fully electric future.
Electric Drive Unit 2.0: Power and Efficiency at the Core
At the heart of the new CLA Class is the Electric Drive Unit 2.0. Developed in-house by Mercedes, this powerful unit boasts 268 horsepower and is positioned on the rear axle. For the US market, the CLA will come with 4Matic all-wheel drive, featuring an additional 107-hp electric motor on the front axle. The compact design of the powertrain allows for a front trunk, while the front motor serves as a boost drive, engaging when necessary. This is made possible by the Disconnect Unit, which can decouple the front motor from the axle, increasing the efficiency and range of the EV.
800-Volt Technology and Rapid Charging Capability
The electric CLA sedan will incorporate advanced 800-volt technology and offer up to 320-kilowatt DC fast charging. While specific recharge times have not been disclosed, Mercedes refers to the Concept CLA Class, which promised to add 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes. The vehicle will be equipped with a premium battery that provides 85.0 kilowatt-hours of energy, aiming to achieve up to 466 miles of range on the WLTP cycle.
48-Volt Hybrid Capability
Recognizing that not everyone is ready to embrace fully electric vehicles, Mercedes has designed the MMA models to accommodate 48-volt hybrid engines. In the US, the CLA Class will feature the newly developed M252 1.5-liter four-cylinder Miller-cycle engine from the Family of Modular Engines (FAME) lineup. Equipped with a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and an integrated 27-hp electric motor, the hybrid powertrain delivers 188 horsepower to the front wheels and is available with 4Matic AWD.
Release Date and Pricing
The CLA's starting price has yet to be announced, but it is expected to go on sale next year. The current CLA Coupe has a starting price of $45,550.
