Mercedes-AMG is going to Turn to Hybrids by the end of the decade
By 2020 Mercedes-AMG models will get hybrid power train mechanisms.
Thomas Weber who is German carmaker’s head of research and development, mixed AMG performance autos could be on market by 2020 because of growing pressure on the performance sub-model to decrease CO2 production of its brand lineup.
At the present time, Mercedes proposes several hybrid models containing the S400 and E400 in addition to the fresh hybrid S-Class Plug, and is adding many more at a quick pace, with planning to launch not less than 10 new plug-in hybrids by 2017.
Till now, AMG has been hesitating to use hybrid power train mechanisms because the company isn’t confident that its consumers are ready. “We haven’t done yet, because now the consumer wouldn’t purchase it,” said Weber in his dialogue with Autocar. “AMG consumers inform us that they wish for the most sporting performance opportunity possible in the performance market, doesn’t matter which sector! We can’t be sure when they will be prepared for hybrid.”
Weber did prove that the carmaker has been planning for some period of time to switch to necessary hybrid power train mechanisms, or at least, proposing them in the AMG lineup to help conform to severe emissions standards. The great news is, AMG can calmly come to Mercedes-Benz’s bin of current hybrid technology to find a plain e-boost decision that will raise regenerative energy and performance through braking.
