Tokyo Drift's Iconic Mazda RX-7 Fetches a Staggering £911,000 at Auction

The Fast and Furious saga has introduced some of cinema’s most remarkable vehicles, many of which have recently been up for auction. The latest to change hands is the 1992 Mazda RX-7 FD featured in Tokyo Drift (2006), which secured a remarkable £911,000 ($1.2 million) at a Bonhams auction.

Believed to be one of only two remaining models used in the film, this RX-7 was driven by the character Han, portrayed by Sung Kang. Adorned with a VeilSide Fortune body kit from the renowned Japanese aftermarket specialist, the car was primarily showcased in static and close-up scenes. Traces of its cinematic past remain visible, including camera mount impressions and the “#71 HANS” decals scattered across the vehicle.

Distinctive Features and Modifications

This particular Mazda RX-7 stands out with a body extension measuring over 7.9 inches beyond the standard FD model, while still preserving the original roof and tailgate. Its pearlescent orange finish is complemented by 19-inch Andrew Premier Series Racing Evolution 5 wheels paired with Pirelli P Zero Nero tires, boasting a rear width of 12.0 inches.

Restoration and Mileage

Prior to the auction, the vehicle underwent an extensive restoration process. RE-Amemiya meticulously rebuilt the RX-7’s twin-rotor turbocharged engine, ensuring its performance was up to par. The car has accumulated a total of 66,785 miles, with only 5,000 miles driven post-restoration, highlighting its pristine condition despite prolonged storage.

Comparative Auction Prices

The staggering £911,000 price tag eclipses the $550,000 sale of Paul Walker’s 1994 Toyota Supra in 2021. However, Walker’s 2000 Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R, modified by Kaizo Industries, fetched an even higher price of $1.35 million in 2023.
