Next Gen Mazda2 will be Constructed on Lowered CX-5 Platform
HOT information: the next-gen Mazda2 will be constructed on the same base as the CX-5 crossover.
The information comes from the Japanese brand’s UK importer representative in an interview with Carsbase. In the very interview, he announced that Mazda is moving to 4-year model cycles with upgrades after only 2 years. That means we’ll receive a fresh Mazda6 when its lifecycle stops in 2016 and we’ll see an upgrade as early as 2014.
Talking about Mazda2, sharing the platform with the brand’s CX-5 will allow Mazda to get multiple modules and powertrains with the current Mazda6 in addition to the next-gen Mazda3. Actually, the CX-5 and 6 are now sharing the same architecture and the Mazda2 and Mazda3 will follow. That also hints that the brand will change all its existing front-wheel drive vehicles to the same architecture.
Additionally, Mazda is not planning a smaller CX-3, at least for now.
