Lamborghini Alters Urus Strategy, Prioritizes Hybrid Over Electric Unveiling
The prestigious automaker Lamborghini is aligning with other manufacturers in postponing the introduction of new electric models. In a recent discussion, the company's CEO announced that the upcoming Urus will maintain a plug-in hybrid system, delaying the pure battery-electric version's debut until potentially 2035.
Stephan Winkelmann, the head of Lamborghini, attributed the postponement to regulatory uncertainties. Speaking to Autocar, he emphasized that retaining the plug-in hybrid powertrain is "crucial for both us and our clients." He further expressed satisfaction that the Urus will still feature a traditional combustion engine.
Current and Future Urus Models
Despite the delay in the electric variant, Winkelmann did not disclose specifics regarding the new SUV's powertrain. The forthcoming 2025 Urus SE combines a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine with an electric motor, delivering a total of 789 horsepower and 701 lb-ft of torque, marking it as the most powerful Urus model to date.
The updated Urus is expected to hit the market in 2029, as initially stated. However, the electric version's launch has been deferred, originally planned to follow the first electric model's release, which has itself been delayed. This postponement might extend further, according to reports.
Lamborghini has already rescheduled the Lanzador concept's production launch from 2028 to 2029. Upcoming changes to the European Union's combustion engine ban could prolong the viability of combustion engines in the region. Additionally, Lamborghini is optimistic about synthetic fuels potentially replacing gasoline in the future. The company is among several automakers revising their product timelines in response to regulatory shifts, with many reaffirming their commitment to continued production of combustion engine vehicles.
