Kia Introduces the Adaptable PV5 Electric Van Catering to All Needs
At the 2025 Kia EV Day in Spain, the spotlight wasn't solely on the EV2 and EV4 concepts. Kia also launched its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV), showcasing the versatile PV5 electric van. Available in Passenger, Cargo, and Chassis Cab versions, the PV5 offers tailored solutions for various uses.
The Chassis Cab variant, an extension of the Cargo model, is highly adaptable. It can be customized into a food truck, freezer unit, crew van, camper, dropside van, or a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), making it suitable for a wide range of commercial and personal applications.
Specifications and Interior Space
The PV5 measures 4659 millimeters in length, 1895 millimeters in width, and 1899 millimeters in height, positioning it slightly smaller than the standard-wheelbase Volkswagen ID. Buzz. With a wheelbase of 2995 millimeters, all PV5 models offer ample space, comfortably seating up to eight passengers in a three-row (2-3-3) configuration, complete with a lift-up tailgate.
Powertrain and Battery Options
Built on the E-GMP.S platform derived from Kia's E-GMP architecture, the PV5 distinguishes itself with a front-wheel-drive layout, unlike other EVs that pair rear-wheel drive with an additional front motor. The single motor setup delivers 161 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
Customers can choose from three battery options: 51.5 kWh and 71.2 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NCM) packs available across all models, and a 43.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery exclusive to the Cargo version. The Passenger model with the larger battery achieves a WLTP range of 400 kilometers (249 miles) and can recharge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
Interior Features and Practicality
Departing from Kia's usual design, the PV5 features a separate 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Additionally, the center console includes physical buttons for essential controls, ensuring ease of use.
The PV5 WAV variant is equipped with a ramp capable of supporting up to 300 kilograms, while the Cargo model offers a spacious 5.1 cubic meters of cargo space, accommodating two Euro pallets.
Market Availability and Future Prospects
Kia plans to release the PV5 in Europe and Korea during the latter half of the year, with other markets to follow in 2026. Despite the 25% Chicken Tax affecting North American imports, Kia's President and CEO, Ho Sung Song, expressed intentions to find a pathway to bring the PV5 to the United States.
The naming of the PV5 suggests future expansions within the Platform Beyond Vehicle lineup, hinting at a range of sizes and models to come.
