Jeep Reintroduces Cherokee with Advanced Hybrid System
After a short pause in 2023 to develop its next generation, Jeep has relaunched the Cherokee. The redesigned 2026 model is larger than its predecessor and comes equipped with enhanced technological features and a new hybrid drivetrain. This release is a strategic move for Jeep, positioning the Cherokee prominently in a highly competitive market segment.
At the heart of the Cherokee is a newly engineered 350-volt hybrid system from Stellantis, tailored specifically for this SUV. Initially, this is the sole powertrain option available, with more choices expected in the near future. The hybrid setup combines a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a dual-motor, electronically managed continuously variable transmission (CVT). It operates without a plug-in capability, utilizing a compact 1.08-kilowatt-hour battery charged by the engine and regenerative braking.
This hybrid configuration delivers 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. Jeep boasts that the Cherokee will achieve over 500 miles on a full charge, maintain a combined fuel efficiency of 37 miles per gallon, and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.3 seconds.
The latest Cherokee is built on Stellantis's STLA Large platform, with dimensions measuring 188.1 inches in length, 83.6 inches in width (including mirrors), and 67.6 inches in height. It features a 113.0-inch wheelbase, approximately six inches longer than the previous model, resulting in a 30% increase in cargo space.
Enhanced Off-Road Features
The Cherokee comes standard with Jeep’s Active Drive I 4x4 system, featuring a rear-axle disconnect and four distinct driving modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, and Mud/Sand.
It offers superior approach and departure angles of 19.6 and 29.4 degrees respectively, along with 8.0 inches of ground clearance and an 18.8-degree breakover angle, making it one of the best in its class for off-road performance.
Jeep is also working on a new Trailhawk version of the Cherokee, although specific details have not yet been disclosed. The previous Trailhawk model included the Quadra-Drive II full-time 4×4 system, Quadra-Lift air suspension, underbody protection, and several off-road enhancements.
Design and Interior Technology
The exterior of the Cherokee features a modern design while paying homage to the classic XJ model. It has a straightforward, boxy shape with U-shaped daytime running lights surrounding the LED headlights, reminiscent of the XJ's square lighting units. The rear showcases a distinct D-pillar shape inspired by military jerry cans, adding a sharp edge to the overall look.
Inside, the Cherokee maintains a clean and familiar layout similar to the Wagoneer S. The dashboard includes a squircle-shaped steering wheel, styled ventilation covers, and a luxurious cabin ambiance.
Standard features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen powered by Uconnect 5, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A newly introduced rotary gear selector allows for more storage space in the center console, among other storage-optimized areas.
Safety and convenience features comprise rain-sensing wipers, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking assistance, and Active Driving Assist, offering Level 2 driving assistance. Optional upgrades based on trim levels include a 360-degree camera system, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, a front tire-to-curb view, a dual-pane sunroof, and a foot-activated power liftgate.
Pricing and Availability
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be available for purchase later this year, with the top-tier Limited and Overland trims priced at $44,490 and $47,990 respectively, including a $1,995 destination fee. The base model starts at $38,990, which is $200 less than the previous version, while the mid-level Laredo trim is priced at $41,990. These models are expected to reach dealerships in early 2026.
