GM Off-Road SUV Versions Being Considered
General Motors could offer off-road variants of the next-gen SUVs uncovered earlier this month.
The company hasn’t settled on a game plan yet for the brand-new Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL. Last iterations of those vehicles came with a Z71 off-road package, but weren’t strong sellers according to executive head engineer for GM trucks Jeff Luke.
“We are looking at, for this generation, a more off-road version,” Luke informed CarsBase.
Most utility cars sold today use a unibody structure, which is less capable in off-road conditions. Luke said people look at trucks like the Tahoe and Suburban as more off-road capable than car-based crossovers.
Vehicles fitted with Z71 came with better suspension details, larger wheels and styling touches, but off road variants of the fresh SUVs will possibly build on that further.
Aside from off-road upgrades, the cars will also be available with further refreshments later. Luke assured that GM is going to upgrade the cars a time goes on, even featuring changes to the powertrain.
