A $245M Investment of GM in an Innovative Vehicle Program
General Motors is cooking up a tasty dish.
The American producer has announced its intention to invest $245 million in its plant in Orion (Michigan). This investment is supposed to support a completely new vehicle program. The automaker says it will not remind any of the existing programs in the factory’s 32-year life. There was not much information revealed by the manufacturer. The Orion Assembly factory is producing the Buick Verano and Chevrolet Sonic now. The automaker has already invested $160 million into the factory not long ago for producing the coming-soon Chevrolet Bolt EV.
There probably will be a lot of gossips and speculations about the vehicle which has not been named yet. Meanwhile, General Motors assures that the car will be brand-new. The automaker says that it will be something we have never seen before.
The plant, which did not have any work till its reopening five years ago, received $962 million. Now the company noticed that $5.4 billion will be invested in American producing for the next 3 years.
By the way, General Motors intends to keep up with Tesla. It looks like the Chevrolet Bolt will beat the gun on the Model 3. Though, Tesla will invade the crossover segment with its Model X since General Motors has not come up with a fully-electrical vehicle yet. Gossips assure that Tesla is in the process of creating a Model 3 crossover which can induce General Motors to follow the same way.
Cindy Estrada, the UAW vice-president, drew a parallel between Orion and what they can reach while cooperating. Estrada, who is chief of the union’s GM Department says that the plan can be embodied only under the condition of innovative problem solving. Apparently, the investment proves this. UAW-GM shows the entire world that involving both management and workers in the process leads both of them to victory and, moreover, assures the victory of the communities.
