Ford CEO forecasts Appearance of Autonomous Vehicles in 15 Years
Self-driving vehicles are being developed, but it is not known when they will be able to arrive.
Ford CEO guesses that it will take 15 years. He confirms that camera technology is developing really quickly and algorithms are advancing really fast. Only five years ago the CEO did not believe the vehicles will be able to park themselves. He says that the vehicle is becoming the ultimate technology product now.
NHTSA has presented four classification ranges for autonomous vehicles. Completely autonomous vehicles must be on the first level. As to the fourth range, it expects that the driver will provide navigation or destination input. Though, it is not anticipated to be available for controlling at any moment during the driving. The CEO’s prediction touches the fourth level of self-driving vehicles. Nevertheless, it looks like the vehicles on the third level are closer to reality.
Most of the automotive brands are testing level three vehicles on the scale of NHTSA. This means that the driver must be available for occasional control while having a sufficient comfortable driving time. The Google car is placed to automation of the third level. The tech giant is saying their vehicle will be available in two years.
