2015 Ford F-150 will Lose Fully Boxed Frame

If you’ve ever seen a Ford F-150 commercial, you’ve possibly heard someone, like Dennis Leary or Mike Rowe, telling that the vehicle is fully boxed frame. That feature will die with the next-gen of America’s best-selling car.

A frame style that’s touted to be more robust than other variants, enabling the F-150 to tow up to 11,300 pounds, Ford will instead choose a C-shaped frame style CarsBase has learned from a source familiar with the new truck’s development. Major sections will stay fully-boxed, though the C-shape style will be used for portions, similar to what its competitors do.

Reasons for the change are likely due to rumors that the next F-150 will lose up to 700 pounds. The major part of that weight will be dropped through the use of aluminum, rather than steel, for the body. Early reports suggested the F-150 could make use of a revolutionary aluminum frame, but our source informed that he’s seen the 2015 frame and that “it’s surely not aluminum.”

Ford uncovered its next-gen F-150 at the North American International Auto Show at the start of the year in the Atlas Concept, suggesting an evolutionary style enhancement for the all-new vehicle, which will publically debut at next year’s event in Detroit.
