Ferrari's F80 Hypercar: Opting for the Better V-6

The Smaller, Better Option

In a bold move, Ferrari's flagship model, the F80 Hypercar, defies expectations by choosing a V-6 engine over the traditional V-12. While most would assume that a larger engine is superior, Ferrari has opted for the higher performance of the V-6.

Defending the Decision

Enrico Galliera, Chief Marketing & Commercial Officer at Ferrari, explains the rationale behind this choice. He states that although the iconic V-12 was considered, the V-6 proved to be the more powerful option. Ferrari has always prioritized performance, consistently selecting the most high-performing engine available.

This decision contrasts with previous statements from Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni, who defended the use of a V-12 for the 812 Superfast's successor. Manzoni claimed that while a V-8 turbo could improve performance, the emotional appeal of a naturally aspirated V-12 is unparalleled.

Avoiding Electric Solutions

Aside from foregoing the V-12, Ferrari also rejects options such as plug-in hybrids or fully electric powertrains. Instead, they determined that a hybrid V-6 would provide the best technical solution. This decision reaffirms that Ferrari's forthcoming electric vehicle in 2025 will not be a hypercar but a more practical car, designed for everyday use.

Affirmation from Buyers

The reduction in cylinder count has not deterred buyers. All 799 units of the F80 Hypercar were sold well in advance of its world premiere, despite its €3.6 million price tag. For those seeking a V-12 engine, Ferrari offers the 12Cilindri and potential limited-run models in the Icona series.

Anticipation for the Holy Trinity

With the release of the Ferrari F80 and McLaren W1, enthusiasts eagerly await the unveiling of the final member of the Holy Trinity. The Porsche 918 Spyder, known for its hybrid powertrain, may take a different direction with a fully electric concept called the Mission X. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume will decide this year whether to pursue the production of this electrifying hypercar.
