Details about 8-Speed Corvette with Automatic Gearbox Became Public
Automatic models of C7 Corvette have been using a conventional automatic gearbox for six speeds so far. Recent SAE documents made it clear that further designs of the American carmaker will be modified.
Secrecy has never been a feature of General Motors regarding the number of speeds on its new Corvette, but even more details leaked in SAE report. According to it, the new 8-speed transmission will handle torque of nearly 738 lb-ft with a general ratio spread totalling 7.0. Such a capacity will enable Corvette to use fuel sparingly when reaching cruising speed and gain a quicker speed-up. Based on this information, an assumption can be made that next Corvettes will be even more powerful.
SAE document also revealed that components made of magnesium and aluminum provide the transmission with competitive mass.
The date of implementation of new transmission has not been announced, but the odds are high that with such a gearbox oil consumption of the car will reach 30 mpg. On the highway Stingray model with automatic six-speed transmission consumes nearly 28 mpg, and with a manual gearbox for seven speeds – nearly 29 mpg.
