Acura RSX Returns as a Cutting-Edge Electric Crossover
Almost a quarter-century after its initial launch as the Integra's successor—a more refined take on the Honda Civic—the Acura RSX is making a significant return. This time, it's transformed into an electric crossover featuring a stylish fastback silhouette. Acura showcased the new RSX Prototype at Monterey Car Week, offering a preview of the upcoming electric vehicle.
Distinct from the ZDX, which is built on GM's Ultium EV platform, the RSX represents Honda's in-house development. It will be the inaugural production vehicle based on Honda's latest EV architecture, first introduced with the Honda 0 Series concepts. Acura plans to manufacture the RSX alongside the traditional gas-powered Integra at their Marysville, Ohio facility. (It's intriguing to think that two decades ago, the idea of the RSX and Integra coexisting—with one evolving into an SUV—would have seemed far-fetched.)
Although Acura labels this vehicle as a "prototype," Honda's prototypes typically closely resemble the final production models. Therefore, the showcased RSX prototype is likely a true reflection of what the production version will look like, though it's unclear if the vibrant yellow paint will be available as an option.
From a technical standpoint, the RSX is set to feature dual-motor all-wheel drive, a double wishbone setup for the front suspension, and high-performance Brembo brakes. The prototype rides on 21-inch wheels, and its wide rear end draws design cues from the second-generation NSX.
Innovative Infotainment and Charging Features
The RSX will be the first Honda vehicle to incorporate the company's new infotainment system, ASIMO OS, named after Honda's renowned humanoid robot. Acura describes the RSX as a "software-defined" vehicle, equipped with an operating system that personalizes user experiences and supports over-the-air updates.
Additionally, the RSX will feature a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, similar to Tesla's, and will offer vehicle-to-load capabilities, allowing it to function as a portable generator.
Pending Specifications and Expectations
Acura has been relatively tight-lipped about many aspects of the RSX, including its performance metrics, battery capacity, range, and pricing. However, given its smaller footprint compared to the ZDX, it's reasonable to expect the RSX to be more affordable.
Fortunately, as is usually the case with Honda concepts, more detailed information is anticipated to be released in the near future.
