Possible Introduction of a Hybrid Ford Mustang on the Horizon
Back in 2017, Ford's then-CEO Mark Fields unveiled the concept of a hybrid Mustang. Since that announcement, enthusiasts have heard whispers about a potential electrified Mustang and the electric Mustang Mach-E SUV, but a hybrid variant has not yet been released. Recent information from Ford Authority reveals that Ford is actively developing a hybrid version of the current S650 Mustang, internally referred to as the S650E.
Ford Authority reports that Ford has created mule prototypes for this model, although specifics regarding the hybrid powertrain remain undisclosed. The timeline for production is uncertain, especially considering the Trump Administration's repeal of stringent fuel-economy standards.
Ford's Electrification Strategy
In 2023, Ford CEO Jim Farley indicated that while there are no immediate plans for an all-electric Mustang coupe, the company is open to introducing a partially electrified model. Additionally, Ford Racing has been experimenting with hybrid powertrains, demonstrating the company's interest in leveraging electrification for enhanced performance.
Market Considerations
Since Ford's initial announcement in 2017, hybrid performance vehicles have become more commonplace, though affordable options remain limited—the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray being a prime example, with a starting price exceeding $100,000. A hybrid Mustang could pave the way for more accessible performance hybrids, particularly in European markets where strict Euro 7 emission regulations pose significant challenges for traditional V-8 engines.
With the S650-generation Mustang expected to remain in production into the 2030s, Ford appears to be preparing for a diverse range of options. While the current demand for a hybrid Mustang in the U.S. may be modest, shifting consumer preferences and regulatory environments could drive future interest. Moreover, if the hybrid system offers noticeable benefits without major drawbacks, Ford could attract traditional Mustang enthusiasts to this new variant.
