Mercedes Elegantly Revamps Its Prominent Illuminated Grille

Whether adored or criticized, the distinctive pixelated grille debuted by Mercedes-Benz on the new GLC is set to become a staple across more of the brand’s lineup in the coming years. However, the Vision Iconic concept car showcases this bold design element with remarkable finesse.

The grille on the Vision Iconic pays homage to Mercedes-Benz’s heritage radiator designs, featuring a chrome outline, smoked glass pattern, and contour lighting. While it retains a level of flamboyance similar to the GLC’s grille, it achieves a more upscale and luxurious appearance.

Heritage-Inspired Design

The exterior of the Vision Iconic is heavily influenced by classic models, closely resembling the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn Kurier. The iconic 300SL inspired the rear design, while elements from the W108, W111, and 600 Pullman models influenced the grille’s styling.

Luxurious Interior Features

Inside, the Vision Iconic continues its art-deco theme with a floating glass dashboard known as the Zeppelin, an elegant four-spoke steering wheel, and an integrated AI assistant. The cabin is adorned with blue velvet seating and blue straw marquetry flooring, a decorative technique that dates back to the 17th century and saw a revival in the 1920s.

Innovative Technology

While specific details about the powertrain remain undisclosed, the Vision Iconic is confirmed to be fully electric and includes a steer-by-wire system. Notably, the vehicle features solar paint capable of generating energy from sunlight, potentially adding up to 7,450 miles of range annually under optimal conditions. This technology not only enhances the vehicle’s efficiency but also contributes to its striking exterior look.

The concept car is equipped with neuromorphic computing, a brain-inspired architecture that allows for faster and more efficient AI processing. Mercedes-Benz highlights that this technology can improve traffic sign recognition, enhance vehicle detection, and reduce energy consumption for autonomous driving functions.

Advanced Autonomy

Offering Level 4 autonomy and automated parking, the Vision Iconic enables passengers to relax during their travels, as the vehicle handles parking duties seamlessly.

Currently a concept, it is anticipated that the Vision Iconic’s grille and other design elements will appear in future Mercedes models, such as the forthcoming S-Class EV. While the Vision Iconic itself may not transition to a production model, its innovative features are likely to influence the design and technology of upcoming Mercedes vehicles.
