Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid Wagon Set to Arrive in the U.S.

The introduction of the Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid Wagon in 2025 seems almost out of place in the current American market. Since the 1970s, wagons have struggled to gain popularity in the U.S., and with the recent 25% tariff imposed on German imports as of early April, the odds are stacked against its arrival. However, there's hope that these tariffs might be lifted before Mercedes manages to bring this powerful E-Class hybrid across the Atlantic, showcasing the dedication of the AMG team.

Mercedes has truly gone all out with this model. The 2026 E53 Hybrid Wagon mirrors the European version unveiled over a year ago, boasting a combined output of 577 horsepower under standard conditions and ramping up to 604 horsepower when the Race Start mode is activated. These figures align with the E53 sedan, powered by the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, a single electric motor contributes an extra 161 horsepower, all delivered to the road via the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system.

Performance and Features

When fully activated, the E53 Hybrid Wagon can sprint to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, thanks to the Race Start feature. This mode requires the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, which not only enhances acceleration but also increases the top speed from an electronically limited 155 mph to 174 mph. The package includes an AMG limited-slip rear differential, composite brakes with 15.4-inch front discs, active engine mounts, and a distinctive AMG steering wheel.

Hybrid Efficiency

Beyond performance, the E53 Hybrid Wagon is a plug-in hybrid equipped with a 28.6-kWh battery (21.2 kWh usable) located beneath the rear. This allows the vehicle to reach speeds up to 87 mph on electric power alone. While Mercedes has not disclosed the exact electric range, it is expected to be around 40 miles, slightly less than the E53 Hybrid sedan's 42-mile range, likely due to the wagon's increased weight.

Design and Trims

Available in 12 exterior colors and numerous packages, the E53 Hybrid Wagon offers extensive customization options for the extended-roof E-Class. Enthusiasts can opt for the exclusive E53 Hybrid Edition 1 trim, featuring an Alpine Gray exterior with striking AMG accents and 21-inch wheels. The interior complements the exterior with a gray cabin adorned with yellow trim and Edition 1 branding, along with nearly every available Mercedes option.

Legacy and Pricing

The E53 Hybrid marks AMG's return to high-performance wagons in the U.S., following the discontinuation of the E63 after 2023. Although this new wagon offers slightly more power, it is marginally slower to 60 mph compared to the E63, possibly due to the robust hybrid system and additional weight.

As for pricing, while the E63 started at over $122,000, the E53 Hybrid Wagon is anticipated to be more affordable, potentially priced below $100,000, given that the E53 sedan starts at $89,150 including destination fees. Official pricing details are yet to be announced, with availability expected later in the year.
