Kia Evaluates Launching a Pickup Truck for the U.S. Market

Last year, Kia debuted its first-ever pickup, the Tasman, exclusively for regions like Europe and Australia, thereby excluding the United States from its initial release. However, the South Korean manufacturer is now actively considering introducing a pickup truck tailored specifically for the American market.

During an interview with Automotive News at the Seoul Mobility Show, Kia's CEO Ho Sung Song revealed that the company is "seriously evaluating" the possibility of bringing a pickup truck to the U.S.:

"We'll share more information next week regarding the pickup for the American market. Currently, we're in the assessment phase," he stated.

Unlike the Tasman, which wasn't designed with U.S. standards in mind, Kia intends to develop a new model that aligns with American road regulations and consumer preferences. This approach suggests that Kia aims to offer a distinctive option in the mid-size truck category, competing with established models such as the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma.

In a recent development, Kia has formed a partnership with General Motors for joint development efforts, potentially paving the way for a collaborative pickup truck project. Additionally, there are rumors that Hyundai may introduce its own version based on this collaboration.

More details are expected to be unveiled on April 9, when CEO Ho Sung Song is scheduled to make an official announcement during Kia's Investor Day. If all goes according to plan, Kia's new pickup could be seen on American roads within the next few years.
