Volkswagen may close its Phaeton Factory

Volkswagen will probably stop manufacturing at the Phaeton plant situated in Dresden. The automaker needs to reduce costs.

The factory is famous for its architecture. The German brand names it “Glaeserne Manufactur”. It can be translated as “transparent plant” from German. One of the recent reports indicates that the factory produces only 8 Phaetons per week. The new CEO of the company is going to shut the plant down in 2016. The manufacturing of Phaeton will be moved to a different factory producing similar Porsche and Audi vehicles.

The supervisory board of the automaker will think about the plant’s future this Friday. It will be a part of VW’s next investment and spending project. In case the factory shuts down, the automaker will transfer its 500 workers to other plants situated in Germany.

The next-gen Phaeton is scheduled to come out in 2019-2020. It will be marketed only as an EV.

The factory in Dresden opened 13 years ago as a futuristic production showpiece. It is considered to be an architectural treasure. The plant often hosts different ceremonies, events, operas and concerts.

VW has not told a word reacting at the report. Though, the automaker noticed that different scenarios are being considered for the factory. Therefore, there is a chance that it will still produce the next-gen Phaeton.
