The second-generation Volvo XC90 was unveiled in August 2014 as the foundational vehicle for Volvo's modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). The model introduced Volvo's modern design language featuring signature Thor's Hammer LED headlights, a vertical grille, and a clean interior centered around a portrait touchscreen interface. Produced as a 5-door crossover SUV, it offers 5-, 6-, or 7-seat seating layouts. Over 40 percent of the chassis body structure uses hot-formed boron steel, creating an exceptionally rigid safety cell.

The powertrain range relies entirely on 2.0-liter four-cylinder Drive-E engines, including T5 and T6 (turbocharged and supercharged) petrol variants alongside D4 and D5 diesel engines. The flagship offering is the T8 Twin Engine (later badged Recharge) plug-in hybrid drivetrain combining a combustion engine with a rear-axle electric motor. A 2019 refresh introduced B-badge mild-hybrid engines with kinetic energy recovery, while a major update in 2024 revised the front fascia styling and introduced an updated infotainment system.
