First generation of the Volvo XC90 mid-size luxury crossover built on the P2 platform and produced from 2002 to 2014.
The first-generation Volvo XC90 (factory code P28) debuted in 2002 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Built on Volvo's P2 platform shared with the S80 sedan and V70 wagon, the vehicle was offered exclusively as a 5-door crossover SUV with five-seat or seven-seat interior configurations. Engineering of the model prioritized safety innovation, introducing segment-first technologies such as the Roll Stability Control (RSC) system, inflatable curtain airbags spanning all three seat rows, and a reinforced boron-steel roof structure.
The engine lineup featured turbocharged inline-five 2.5T petrol engines, inline-six 2.9 T6 and 3.2 naturally aspirated units, as well as a 4.4-liter V8 developed in collaboration with Yamaha. Diesel offerings included 2.4-liter D5 turbodiesel engines. Drive options encompassed front-wheel drive and Haldex electronically controlled all-wheel drive. A facelift in 2006 refreshed the exterior lighting, bumpers, and front grille while introducing a six-speed automatic transmission. Additional minor styling updates followed in 2012, alongside notable trims such as the sporty R-Design and flagship Executive versions.
