The first-generation Volkswagen T-Roc subcompact crossover with internal designation A1 was officially introduced in August 2017. Built on the modular MQB A1 architecture, the vehicle features a rigid body structure combined with a MacPherson strut front suspension and either a torsion beam or multi-link rear setup depending on the drivetrain. The model stood out with its expressive design language, featuring dual-tone paint options and extensive interior customization. Alongside the standard five-door crossover, Volkswagen introduced a unique two-door T-Roc Cabriolet in 2019 featuring an automated soft-top roof system.

The powertrain lineup for the first-generation T-Roc encompasses turbocharged gasoline engines including the 1.0 TSI, 1.5 TSI, and 2.0 TSI, alongside 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI turbodiesel units. Transmission choices consist of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. Models equipped with 4Motion all-wheel drive utilize an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch system. The high-performance 300 hp T-Roc R joined the lineup in 2019, followed by a comprehensive mid-cycle refresh in late 2021 that introduced redesigned LED lighting, a revised dashboard, and enhanced driver assistance suites.
