The Volkswagen Phaeton (Typ 3D) launched at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. Initiated by VW Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch to showcase engineering perfection, the F-segment luxury sedan shared the D1 steel platform with the Bentley Continental GT. Hand assembly took place at the Dresden Transparent Factory in standard and long wheelbase formats.

Features included draft-free 4-zone climate control, adaptive air suspension, and 4Motion AWD. Powertrains included 3.2/3.6 V6, 4.2 V8, 6.0 W12 (up to 450 hp), alongside 3.0 V6 TDI and 5.0 V10 TDI diesels.
