The Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle, HA3W platform designation) premiered in 2009 as one of the world's first mass-produced electric cars. Built on the rear-midship architecture of the Mitsubishi i kei car, it featured a 5-door hatchback egg-shaped profile. Engineering of the i-MiEV I (HA3W) (factory code HA3W) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. The vehicle was distributed globally in multiple configuration packages designed to satisfy diverse market demands and regional regulatory specifications.

Its electric motor generated 47 kW (64 hp) and 180 Nm of torque driving the rear wheels. A 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack provided a range of up to 160 km and supported CHAdeMO fast charging. Production ended in 2021. The powertrain lineup incorporated efficient engine families paired with robust manual, automatic, or continuously variable transmissions depending on trim selection. Drivetrain engineering integrated advanced suspension tuning and traction management systems.
