The Mercedes-Benz X-Class (chassis code W470) was revealed in July 2017 in Cape Town as the brand's first luxury mid-size pickup truck. Developed as part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, it shared its ladder-frame chassis with the Nissan Navara D23, but featured a widened track, reinforced frame rails, bespoke suspension calibration, and unique exterior sheet metal.

Offered exclusively in a four-door Double Cab configuration, entry versions (X 220 d and X 250 d) used 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbodiesels with part-time 4WD. The range-topping X 350 d 4MATIC incorporated Mercedes' own 258-hp 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, and permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Due to niche positioning and weak global sales, production in Barcelona ceased in May 2020.
