The Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (chassis code X204) debuted at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show as a premium compact crossover (Geländewagen Luxus Kompaktklasse). Mechanically based on the W204 C-Class 4MATIC platform, the GLK stood out in its segment thanks to bold, angular styling and upright glasshouse lines directly inspired by the flagship G-Wagen.

Engine offerings included naturally aspirated 3.0-liter and 3.5-liter V6 gasoline powerplants (GLK 280, GLK 300, GLK 350) along with 2.1-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesels. Transmission was the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic driving rear wheels or permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive. A comprehensive 2012 facelift softened exterior lines with restyled headlights, revised bumpers, and moved the automatic gear selector to the steering column. Production concluded in 2015 when it was succeeded by the GLC-Class.
