The Honda S2000 (AP1/AP2) launched in April 1999 to celebrate Honda's 50th anniversary. The two-seat roadster featured a 50:50 front-midship weight distribution, a rigid X-bone frame structure, and double-wishbone suspension at both ends. Power was routed exclusively to the rear wheels via a mechanical limited-slip differential.

The initial AP1 featured a 2.0-liter F20C inline-four (240–250 hp) with a 9,000 rpm redline. The AP2 update in 2003 introduced a 2.2-liter F22C1 engine (237 hp) with an 8,200 rpm redline for North America. Power was managed solely by a short-throw 6-speed manual. A 2003 refresh updated lights, bumpers, and 17-inch wheels.
