The Honda Element (YH1/YH2) debuted in late 2002 targeted at outdoor enthusiasts. Its boxy unibody frame omitted central B-pillars to accommodate side cargo loading through bi-parting doors. The interior featured rubberized flooring and water-resistant seat fabric.

Power came from a 2.4-liter K24 i-VTEC engine (160–166 hp) mated to a 5-speed manual, 4-speed, or 5-speed automatic, with available Real Time 4WD. Updates in 2006 and 2008 introduced body-colored fenders on SC trims, restyled headlights, and safety upgrades.
