The second-generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 2002 model year on the hydroformed body-on-frame GMT360 platform. Alongside the standard five-seat SUV, the lineup expanded to include the long-wheelbase three-row Envoy XL (GMT370) and the innovative Envoy XUV (GMT305/GMT368), which featured a retractable rear roof section and a washable cargo area. The standard powertrain was GM's all-aluminum 4.2-liter Vortec 4200 inline-six producing between 275 and 291 horsepower, while a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 generating up to 300 horsepower was optional and came standard on the upscale Denali trim introduced in 2005. Both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants utilized a four-speed 4L60-E automatic transmission. Compared to its predecessor, it gained a stiffer chassis, independent front suspension, and vastly superior passenger volume. Safety was updated throughout production with standard StabiliTrak stability control in 2006. The second-generation Envoy was produced through 2009 for North America and select Middle Eastern markets.
