The Cadillac ATS premiered at the 2012 North American International Auto Show as an all-new compact luxury vehicle targeted directly at European sport sedans. Serving as the launch model for GM's rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform, it featured double-pivot MacPherson strut front suspension and a five-link independent rear setup. Engineering focused on achieving a class-leading low curb weight under 3,400 pounds and a 50:50 weight distribution. In 2014, a sleek two-door ATS Coupe joined the lineup featuring a lower roofline and wider front and rear tracks. The exterior design incorporates distinctive body proportions, sharp character lines, and an iconic front grille featuring the brand's emblem.

Engine offerings comprised a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (202 hp), a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 272 hp, and a 3.6-liter V6 outputting up to 335 hp. Transmissions included a Tremec six-speed manual or 6-speed and 8-speed automatics with optional all-wheel drive. The track-focused ATS-V launched for 2016 equipped with a 464-horsepower 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6, Brembo brakes, electronic limited-slip differential, and Magnetic Ride Control. Standard and optional equipment included advanced active and passive safety systems, multi-zone climate control, and upgraded interior electronics.
