Chevrolet Should Have Considered Making a Truck

Competition with Toyota Prius was possible for GM.

Chevrolet Volt released by GM was made as a sedan, but if the company wanted competition with Toyota Prius, it would be more reasonable to make it a truck. Bob Lutz who held a post of the brand’s vice chairman commented that compact sedans have gained their large share at the market being the most efficient in fuel consumption and that a hybrid can give only minimal advantages. If this technology were implemented for a truck, a car less economical and less environmental-friendly, the significance of such a launch would have increased.

Currently Lutz is holding a position of board member of VIA Motors specializing in trucks working on hybrid system. Brand’s X-Truck concept has a lot of resemblance to 2013 Silverado by Chevrolet. The car has an 8-cylinder engine for 5.3 litres, battery capacity of 24 kWh, which amounts to 100 mpg with additional 35 miles on the electric engine.

The production start of VIA Motors car is going to take place in a few months. The vehicle will be a hybrid with 6-cylinder 4.3-litre engine plus a motor working on electricity mated to amount to 300 kW.
